Day 2 at Recon: Deal-Making in the Cloud

Day Two at Recon 2012, Property Capsule CEO, Alex Markson gave an in-depth crash course on cloud technology in the Social Media Pavilion.

Markson explained the paradigm shift from traditionally deployed servers to cloud computing, and how anyone can virtually create a massive data center in the cloud using services such as Amazon’s Elastic Web Services platform.

He explained how this new way of storing information has opened new avenues for deal-making through a rapid improvement in available technology, and how the iPad is the poster child for a new generation of cloud services.

Agents and Brokers can easily access information such as site plans on any device including the iPad by storing all of their information in generalized cloud based services such as Dropbox, Google Docs and of course our favorite tailor-made solution: Property Capsule.

The audience agreed that cloud based infrastructure is the way of the future, but had concerns about security.

One audience member asked specifically about Dropbox– if all your information exists in the cloud, who can access it? Where is the cloud? How is it encrytped?

The simple answer is services, such as Dropbox have a high level of encryption that is very similar to the military. On the other hand, users have to be aware of with whom they share their information and what level of access they have. Also, the beauty of accessing your information on any device anywhere is that you can retrieve your information even when the device is lost. Unfortunately that means that your information is left out there on that device. In this case, the user will have to log in and change passwords, so others can’t access their information.

Another valid concern is the stability of some cloud-based services, such as Dropbox. What if Dropbox goes out of business, where will my information go? How can I retrieve it?

The simple answer of course is to read the terms of agreement of whatever services you are using. What are the contingency plans, if such an event were to occur? If you still have concerns, it’s never too late to backup your information. A lot of the more reputable services allow users to download and store their information remotely. This is a feature that Facebook currently has for users who no longer want to use Facebook, but want to keep their photos and other data. Property Capsule has a similar feature for downloading a ZIP file of your content.

Day 1 at RECon 2012

Day one at RECon 2012 was deal-making at it’s best. First booth at the entrance was Jones Lang LaSalle with a full water feature six Property Capsule Kiosks, and two LCD Monitors on each side. They had a full café with waitstaff meals and refreshments. Definitely one of the most impressive booths.

Stirling Properties were also boasting kiosks, with many people touching and swiping away at the screens to check out their properties before walking in for their appointments.

KLNB hosted our booth at RECon 2012 and all of their Brokers and Agents were using the Property Capsule iPad App to show their property portfolios. They also had two touch screen monitors setup at their entrance, to show attendees who were walking by without an appointment their property portfolios.

In Social Media and Technology pavilion, Peterson Companies Director of Communications, Angela Sweeney shared her expertise in Social Media: Who to connect with, why, where and how. Angela shared twitter accounts that she follows, such as @GlobeStcom and other great sources in Commercial Real Estate. She also shared the do’s and don’ts of connecting with Journalists on Facebook. New Release of Property Capsule

We are pleased to announced that we’ve just launched a new version of Property Capsule, now  available in the App Store. With this new release, Property Capsule  has leveraged it’s  automated digital leasing portfolio management system to fundamentally change the way Commercial Real Estate Leasing Agents do business.  Agents can now create custom meeting materials quickly, giving their clients an interactive way to explore a mapped tour and analyze the demographics and competition in any market.  In addition to that, Third party research data can now be merged with proprietary intelligence stored in your Property Capsule, giving clients the richest data possible.

This version also boasts new admin features, which enables you to list multiple site plans, and use multiple agents.  We’ve also rebuilt the kiosk software from the ground up, to include live maps and email support.  It’s approximately 400%  more awesome (estimates vary), and we couldn’t be happier with the new functionality.  Here’s a complete list of the features, with a few screenshots:

Tours and Meetings
• Map targeted markets and proposed spaces
• Measure demographics by highlighting areas of the map
• Measure distances between points
• Automatically look-up geolocation data from unlimited third-party sources
• Highlight competition
• Toggle points of interest by category
• Draw and write notations right on the map
• Add location specific photos and notes to the map
• Create a PDF of the entire tour

Space details
• Add photos, notes, and documents to each space on your site plan

Multiple site plans per property
• Add multiple site plans for multi-floor properties

Property Versioning
• Create alternative or one-off property profiles for specific leasing opportunities
• Keep the official profile flagged for general use in the Property Capsule
